Board of Deacons 2014 Annual Report 

Mission:  The Office of Deacons as set forth in scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  It is the duty of Deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to anyone who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.  They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the Session.
The Deacons provided or coordinated the following ongoing services:

  • Greeters for Sunday morning church services
  • “Minute for Mission” guests at Sunday services
  • Monthly “birthday flowers” in honor of congregation members
  • Ministering to the homebound members of our congregation with visits, Easter flowers, Thanksgiving gift bags with pumpkin bread, Christmas cards from the congregation, altar flowers, Easter Bunny bags (filled with useful items)
  • Weekly Home Touch newsletters for the home bound members of our congregation
  • Get Well, Sympathy, and Thinking of You cards to members throughout the year
  • Transportation for home bound congregation members to Sunday worship services, as well as to doctor and therapy appointments as needed
  • Regular correspondence and devotional items to college students, and gift cards for Easter and Christmas
  • Served catered meals following the funeral services of deceased members of our congregation or their family members (cake and beverages are provided by the Deacons Fund)
  • Grocery vouchers, gift certificates, and/or monetary donations to families in need of emergency assistance
  • Care packages to members or our congregation serving in the military
  • Refreshments for the Easter Sunrise Service
  • Donation of food/refreshments to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner and other community functions as needed
  • Shipping costs for Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes when the shipping fee is not included in the box
  • “Welcome Baby” cards and gifts to families with new babies
  • Donation to the local Toy Chest
  • hopping Cards Fundraising Program (proceeds applied to the Deacons Fund)
  • Distribution and delivery of food pantry items to participating Heritage House residents
  • Sponsorship of a child through the Friends of Haiti Program
  • RADA Fundraisers (Proceeds applied to the Deacons Fund)
  • A Deacon serves on the Memorial Committee

The Deacons coordinated and/or sponsored the following events:

  • The Girlfriends held a Blanket Bonanza in January (21 blankets were made and distributed)
  • Provided financial assistance to a local family in need when the principal provider was suffering a potential life threatening illness, and a family with children recovering from a devastating accident, and family who had a fire
  • Worked with Canonsburg Hospital by participating in the Health and Wellness Blood Pressure Screening Program
  • Worked with the Elks Club in provide personal hygiene items and other supplies to Brandon Wehile and his battalion
  • Annual Senior Spring Luncheon (A Hollywood Theme honoring 50 year members of our congregation.)
  • Summer Picnic
  • Provided refreshments and a memorial leaf for a reception commemorating Rev. CjE’s 15th Anniversary
  • Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace workshop by providing refreshments
  • Provided financial support to Lance Baker and his family as they enter the mission field
  • Sowing God’s Love Project by providing funds to distribute seeds and invitations to join us for worship among the community
  • Sponsored a Pine Spring counselor with items they asked for and with prayer
  • Issued a check to Amber McCrery mission (Helping women who are victims of human trafficking in Spain)
  • Provided money to purchase 20 uniforms for the mission school in Haiti
  • Took over the operation of the fair booth at the Washington County Fair for 2 days
  • Provided a basket for Habitat for Humanity to auction off
  • Girlfriends had a class where Jan Taylor showed us how to make a fall wreath
  • Coordinated the “Christmas Tea”
  • The Deacons sponsored a fundraiser at Bob Evans on Sunday, March 15th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. proceeds go to support their missions.


The Deacons coordinated the 125th Anniversary of the church by arranging the meal, providing decorations, gathering artifacts and writing the history for the celebration held on October 6, 2013.
